Painting the weather of a moment
Salt & Soul is my studio for original paintings that live somewhere between landscape and feeling. I’m drawn to light more than landmarks — magenta clouds at the edge of evening, a thin bright line on water, soft fields under a huge sky, and abstract color that still carries the salt air of home.
These aren’t souvenir beach scenes. They’re atmospheric studies: impressionistic skies, quiet horizons, and small canvas color fields finished with gold-edged wraps or warm frames. Each piece is signed JK and made to hold its own on a wall without needing a whole “coastal decor” story around it.
I work in layered paint — sometimes thin and washed, sometimes thick and gestural — chasing the mood of weather and time of day. If a painting makes a room feel clearer, softer, or a little more alive, it’s done its job.
Whether you’re looking for a ready original or a commission tuned to your space, I’d love to hear what light you’re after.
Sky, haze, reflection, and color temperature matter more than literal scenery. The goal is a feeling you recognize, not a place you can pin on a map.
Brushwork stays honest — soft blends next to decisive marks, canvas tooth showing through, edges finished with care (including metallic gold on many wraps).
Pieces range from intimate studies to framed statements. They’re meant for real rooms — calm when you need calm, vivid when you want energy.
I start with light — a pink evening sky, a cool blue distance, a bright smear of weather that won’t leave my head.
Horizons, cloud masses, and color fields get laid in loosely so the painting can stay open and breathing.
Washes, thicker strokes, and small hot accents (magenta, gold, turquoise) build depth until the mood locks in.
Edges, framing choices, and a JK signature — then it’s ready to leave the studio for someone’s wall.
